5 Reasons to Visit Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is tucked away in northern Michigan on Lake Huron.

Mackinac Island can arguably be one of the best cities in Michigan to visit.

In fact, according to Detroit News, the island has over 1 million visitors that travel from all over the world to experience it.

Below we have five reasons Mackinac Island is worth visiting.

1. Arrive by Ferry

The adventure begins before you even arrive on this picturesque Michigan Island. To visit the island, a ferry ride is required, making it a fun adventure just getting to the island.

Shepler’s Ferry has two different ports it takes passengers to and from Mackinac Island. The two additional ports are located at Mackinaw City and St. Ignace.

Ferry rides are available seasonally. Check out Shepler’s Ferry FAQ for more information on getting to Mackinac Island.

2. No Cars

Another unique aspect of the island is the absence of cars.

Since the island does not allow cars means, the only form of transportation is bike rides, walking, and horse-drawn carriages.

It is a fun experience to rent a bike and take a horse buggy throughout the island. It adds to the overall unique experience that Mackinac Island has to offer.

3. Take in the Victorian Architecture

Mackinac Island should be on your bucket list if you are a fan of architecture.

The island is home to some of the oldest buildings in Michigan. The town offers a variety of historical buildings that are worth visiting.

One historic building on the island is Fort Mackinac, which comes to life with reenactments and costumed interpreters.

While at Fort Mackinac, don’t forget to fire the canyon!

Don’t forget to visit Benjamin BlackSmith Shop, where you can meet an actual blacksmith. Another great location is the American Fur Company Store & Dr. Beaumont Museum.

4. Try the World Class Fudge

Try the fudge and take some home with you before you leave.

Trust me, you won’t want to miss out. Mackinac Island is known for its fudge.

The locals on the island produce more than 10 thousand pounds of fudge each week.

Now that’s a lot of fudge. Fudge can be found at various shops throughout the island and comes in multiple flavors.

5. Shop and Dine

Visiting Mackinac Island is like returning to a time when small businesses ruled the world.

The island not having chain restaurants, coffee shops, and clothing stores on every corner has allowed it to preserve its authentic vibes created by locally owned businesses.

Therefore, giving it a charming small-town ambiance and allowing visitors to have an exceptional experience.
